While that is true, it serves as the 'base' from which we built on. Of all the CMS available, it was the most flexible to work with. Wordpress can't scale up sensibly, Joomla isn't up to snuff. Beyond that, the rest were not worth considering for a site that can be small or huge (ModX, etc). Python and Ruby on Rails based systems were not cost effective in the hosting realm. We previously had our own Coldfusion CMS, but why reinvent the wheel?

So, we've taken the base and extended on it, fixing all the headaches caused with menus, taxonomy, ubercart, breadcrumbs (our breadcrumbs reflect URL path based on taxonomy still, including a view), advanced optimization and the like. We also beat Acquia to the punch with pushing code updates to a remote site (for core and contrib modules). Currently, there are 80 modules in use and over half are custom written. We also simplified multi-site setups to much degree, with 1 line change in bootstrap and settings.php. Though that is our only core hack, we find it easier than the alternative way of multisite. It's also recursive :)

I can't really get into too much more detail than that, but we've put a couple of solid months in ironing out most of Drupal's shortcomings into a really great Drupal-based product/service for our clients.

The next big site rollout using it will be for <a href="http://www.ckyalliance.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">CKY</a> in May.

Your "new system" smells an awful lot like Drupal (right down to mentioning Drupal in the js include) - have you made some custom modifications?
